Das North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) ist der Standard, den Behörden und Unternehmen in den USA, Kanada und Mexiko verwenden, um Firmen nach der Art ihrer wirtschaftlichen Tätigkeit zu klassifizieren. Es hat das ältere SIC-System (Standard Industrial Classification) abgelöst und wird gemeinsam von den statistischen Behörden aller drei Länder gepflegt, mit einem Überarbeitungszyklus von fünf Jahren (die aktuelle Version ist NAICS 2022).
Jeder NAICS-Code ist eine zwei- bis sechsstellige Zahl:
- 2 Stellen: Sektor (die breiteste Kategorie, z. B. 54 = Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services)
- 3 Stellen: Subsektor
- 4 Stellen: Branchengruppe (industry group)
- 5 Stellen: NAICS-Branche (NAICS industry)
- 6 Stellen: nationale Branche (national industry, die spezifischste Ebene, genutzt für US-spezifische Auswertungen)
Je weiter du nach rechts gehst, desto spezifischer wird die Klassifikation. Der NAICS-Code eines Unternehmens verengt sich von einem breiten Sektor bis hin zu einer präzisen Beschreibung dessen, was es tatsächlich tut.

Er greift auf jeder Ebene der Hierarchie, sodass ein zweistelliger Sektor-Code ein weites Netz spannt und ein sechsstelliger Code auf eine präzise Branche eingrenzt. Beispiel: "54" liefert das gesamte Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services, während "541120" nur Offices of Notaries zurückgibt.
Er ist der am stärksten standardisierte der verfügbaren Branchenfilter dieser Endpunkte (die anderen sind industry und linkedin_industry). Daher ist er der Filter der Wahl, wenn du konsistente, klar definierte Branchengrenzen brauchst statt breiterer Kategorie-Buckets: nützlich, um Prospect-Listen oder Kontaktsuchen zu bauen, die eine bestimmte Branche präzise treffen müssen, statt sich auf einen lose verwandten Keyword-Bucket zu verlassen.
